Delfeayo Marsalis-Pontius Pilate’s Decision
Posted in jazz recordings by John Roos at 4:18 am |

Clearly, the Marsalis family is loaded with talent. Most of the attention has been on trumpeter Wynton and saxophonist Branford (as well as father, Ellis). As the producer of many of their albums, brother Delfeayo clearly has a good ear as well. However, a few years ago, in a used CD-shop, I discovered his album Pontius Pilate’s Decision (BMG 63134-2). Having never heard Delfeayo as a musician, this 1992 recording was a pleasant surprise, and highly rewarding.

This is a fascinating concept album. Totally instrumental in nature, it takes us through the crucifixion of Jesus, with cuts featuring on key personalities, from Barabbas to Nicodemus, and events (e.g., The Last Supper). The detailed notes describe the background of each peace, and the overall design, musically and from the perspective of the story. Although the inspiration, obviously, is religious in nature, the album can be enjoyed as a pure musical experience. And enjoy it I have.

Delfeayo has assembled a first-rate team of musicians. In his notes, he draws particular attention not to brothers Brandon or Wynton (both of whom play on several cuts here) but brother Jason, a mere teenager at the time of this recording. His work on drums is, indeed, invigorating and energetic. The piano chair, for example, is shared on various cuts, by Kenny Kirkland, Red Atkins, and Marcus Roberts.

Delfeayo proves himself to be an excellent trombonist. Listening to his work on this album, I constanly have wondered why he hasn’t played and recorded more. Perhaps it simply is because he has spent so much of his time in producing.

This recording may be hard to find, but I certainly recommend it.
