The idea of a meaningful review of Beethoven symphonies always has seemed ludicrous. Such monumental works, played and recorded so often, and often so magnificently! Often with such impact! How silly it seems even to suggest a “best” recording or “ideal” performance. The “preferential” approach. But, sparked an amazing offer on i-Tunes, I have found myself more absorbed in Beethoven symphonies than any time in recent memory. And I feel compelled to write about my observations, incomplete as they may be.
Actually there were two amazing offers. The first was the complete Beethoven symphonies conducted by Josef Krips . . . for only $7.99. Although not eager for another set of Beethoven symphonies, I just couldn’t resist. Krips is a credible conductor, and even though these recordings were made in 1960., the sound is acceptable. These performances are fair to good. Good, cheap introductions. But little more. (This set also can be purchased in conventional disk format through Amazon or other sources.)
But the second iTunes offer was of a different calibre. The recent complete recordings performed by the London Symphony under Bernard Haitink, in glorious, digital sound. All for $15.99. What a bargain! These are uniformly excellent recordings and performances. As a digital download, I cannot recommend this set too highly (but it, too, is available in standard disk format).
Exploring these sets somehow set off a spark within me. Particularly the Haitink set renewed my hunger to hear more. To experience these symphonies again, and again.
I turned the complete set with Riccardo Muti leading the Philadelphia Orchestra. This set doesn’t seem to be available any longer but individual symphonies are. Such as the 9th. I vividly remember the morning, sitting alone in my office, listening to this 9th. I was caught up. Completely captivated. Caring less whether or not this was the “best.” But this recording brought me to unbelievable heights. I was so appreciative to have the privilege of listening to music recorded by such masters.
But this only paved the way for my journey through the set recorded by Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. If my Beethoven binge has generated any firm convictions, it is the superiority of this set. I have many “favorites,” but this is an extraordinary set, and receives my highest recommendation.
My journey through the symphonies continues. I renewed my acquaintance with Leonard Bernstein’s Eroica, recorded with the Vienna Philarmonice. An idiosyncratic recording but one that still sweeps me off my feet.
The Carlos Kleiber recording of the the 5th and 7th symphonies. Still probably in a class by itself.
I’ve listened to, and been impressed by the new recordings made by Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Symphony, and Andrew Manze and Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra. And we cannot forget the incredible recordings by Herbert van Karajan. Georg Solti. Karl Bohm. George Szell. Once again, I’m reminded of the foolishness of trying to suggest that one is “best.”
In short, my conclusion is a simple one: Beethoven wrote nine great symphonies. And, as often as a person may have listened to them, they still provide unparalleled rewards. In my (admitedly limited) experience, my first recommendation would be the Abbado set. But no one should be without the Haitink/LSO. Even those who have one or many sets should not pass up a deal so outstanding.
Finally, if (like me) you have not listened to many Beethoven symphonies during your recent past, I recommend a Beethoven binge. A highly rewarding experience!
